Tuesday 3rd April 2018. This time I went to the
center in the evening. On my previous visits, I noticed that more people show
up towards the end of the day, as they are completely done with their classes.
This gave me a lot more to observe.
Continuing on with my previous theme about athletes and
their cell phone usage, I saw another group of athletes, field hockey players
this time all enter the center at the same time. They proceeded to do the same
with as the football players yesterday. They signed in at a front desk, walked
towards the back of the center, then sat down and immediately went on their
phones. They continued on their phones and chatting with eachother, until one
of them had a question that she needed a tutor for. A tutor then moved his
belongings and sat with the hockey players in order to help the girl with her
work. As soon as one of them started doing work, the others soon followed and
within 10 minutes, all five of them were scribbling down in their notebooks,
with not a cellphone in sight.
How strange, I thought? Seeing as these athletes work in
teams a lot, it started to make sense to me why they were so easily influenced
by eachother. Whilst I stopped observing this particular group of athletes, I would not have surprised me if shortly after, one of them got their cell
phone out and the others did the same.
I additionally paid particular attention to a girl that
needed help with financial accounting. She was working with a tutor
individually and I overheard her saying that she was worried about her test
that was coming up in a few days. We’ve all been there, or at least I have.
Panicking about an upcoming exam, and try your best to cram in as much knowledge
as possible in the time you have remaining. I have total respect for the girl
though. She came to the tutoring center, alone, and not once was she on her
phone. She gave her undivided attention to her work and managed to get a lot of
it done.
