Monday 2rd April 2018. Mondays – you either love
them or you hate them. Me, I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of Mondays. The
start of the week; thinking about how quickly the weekend passed; kicking
myself over the amount of work that needs to be done. And from my observations
today, I can say that a lot of the students at Pace feel the same way.
I sat in the tutoring center at 1PM, for 1 hour. Almost
everyone that walked into the center had the same expression on their face. A
combination of “why am I here”, “no-one talk to me”, and “why am I not still in
bed”. It must have been a long morning for some, barely lifting their feet up
from the ground as they stumbled into the center to find a desk. A lot of
students do not have class on Monday mornings, so consequently a lot of sports
teams have practice at this time. This was especially noticeable when a group
of four football players all walked in together, cheeks somewhat blushed, and
their foreheads ever so slightly glistening with sweat.
These football players all signed in with a tutor at the
front desk then continued to walk further into the tutoring center before
reaching their final destination. As soon as they sat down, the first thing
they did was whip out their cellphones. Generation Z; what can we really
expect, huh? Not exactly…
This was the biggest thing I noticed whilst being in the
tutoring center. 90% of the athletes that were in there (identified by the huge
Pace Athletics logo on their clothing) were on their cellphones for almost the
entirety of their visit. As a result,
there was a lot of interaction between athletes themselves, but very little
communication with the tutors, who we would assume, they would be talking to
the most. Compare this to the non-athletes in there. The non-athletes are not
made to go to the tutoring center. They are giving up their own time, to go to
the center to get the help that they need. They are fully aware that the only
person making them attend are themselves, so it would be a waste of time for
them to be on their phones the whole time, right?
But maybe this was just a bad day; maybe tomorrow it will be
different.
